Oakland Hills South
Oakland Hills CC located in Bloomfield Township, Michigan, has a rich history dating back to its founding in 1916 by a group of local businessmen. The club is known for its two 18-hole golf courses designed by renowned architect Donald Ross: the South Course, which opened in 1918, and the North Course, which followed in 1930.
Throughout its history, Oakland Hills has hosted numerous prestigious golf tournaments, including six U.S. Opens, three PGA Championships, two U.S. Senior Opens, a U.S. Women's Amateur, two U.S. Men's Amateurs, and the 5th Ryder Cup in 2004. The South Course, in particular, has been the site of many historic moments in golf, with notable winners including Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, and Ben Hogan.
The club has undergone several renovations and expansions over the years. In 1968, the clubhouse was renovated, and in 2000, the club expanded its pro shop and constructed a first tee facility. A significant renovation of the South Course was completed in 2016, with the goal of hosting the U.S. Open in 2028.
Tragically, the Oakland Hills Country Club experienced a devastating fire in February 2022 that destroyed the clubhouse. However, the club has remained committed to preserving its history and traditions, and has already begun the process of planning and constructing a new clubhouse.
Today, Oakland Hills continues to be a prestigious golf club, hosting major championships and attracting some of the biggest names in the sport. The club is proud of its heritage and considers itself a steward of a national golf treasure.
